PS5 HDMI port: why it fails, and how we fix it
Black screen on a console that still powers on? Nine times out of ten it's the HDMI port — and it's repairable without replacing the whole system.
It's one of the most common consoles we see in the shop: the PS5 powers on, the fan spins, the light comes up white — but the TV reads "No Signal." The console is fine. The HDMI port isn't.
Why the HDMI port fails
The HDMI connector is soldered directly to the PS5's mainboard, and it takes more physical stress than any other part of the system. Every time the console gets moved, bumped, or set down with the cable still plugged in, that force leverages against the port. Over time the tiny solder joints under it crack, or the metal pins inside the connector bend and short against each other.
The most common cause we see is a cable tugged sideways — someone trips the cord, or the console falls off a shelf while it's plugged in. That single moment is usually enough to break the connection between the port and the board.
When it's the port vs. the HDMI chip
There are two failure points, and telling them apart is the whole job. The first is the physical port: bent pins or cracked solder. The second is the HDMI encoder chip (the retimer IC) that sits just behind the port and processes the video signal. A hard yank can damage both at once.
Under a microscope we check the port pins first, then test the chip. If the port is the only casualty, it's a straightforward part swap. If the encoder chip is gone, that's a more involved micro-soldering job — but it's still a board-level repair, not a reason to throw the console away.
How we fix it
We pull the board, heat the old HDMI port off with hot air, clean the pads, and solder a fresh port in its place under magnification. If the encoder chip is faulty, we replace that too. Then we reassemble and test on a real display before it leaves the shop — no guesswork, no "try it and see."
Most single-port jobs turn around fast. Chip-level work takes longer because it's delicate. Either way you keep your console, your storage, and your saved games — a board repair doesn't touch your data.
