The History Beneath 95 Mill Street

PHYX Device Repair sits on ground with a long industrial story. The buildings along Mill Street, set beside the Mill River, trace back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, when this corner of Springfield helped arm a new country. The complex is known today as Mill Park Commons, but its roots reach into the earliest days of the Springfield Armory.

The Armory was established in 1777, during the Revolutionary War. General Henry Knox, George Washington's chief of artillery, recommended Springfield, and Washington approved the site after scouting it. The location made sense on every count. Springfield sat where several rivers met, including the Connecticut, and where four major roads ran toward New York City, Boston, Albany, and Montreal. It also sat far enough upriver from Enfield Falls to stay out of reach of British ships.

In its early years the Armory mainly stored and repaired weapons. As manufacturing grew more important, operations expanded south and west into parts of Springfield where the rivers could power machinery. Around the turn of the 19th century, the Mill River was dammed to create a mile-long body of water known as Watershops Pond, later called Lake Massasoit. The main shops stood behind the dam, with a foundry and a mill built just below it.

These riverside shops became the manufacturing heart of the Armory. Water power drove the forges, hammers, and machining that shaped barrels, locks, and wooden gun stocks for the muskets and rifles produced here. Springfield weapons were made along this river for nearly two centuries, until the Armory closed in 1968. Much of the original campus is now preserved as part of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site and Springfield Technical Community College.

According to the property's own history, Mill Park Commons stands on the site of one of those original mills. Its first job was practical: to cut and shape the wood used in the Armory's firearms. That heritage still shows in the brick, stone, and heavy timber that give the buildings their character today.

Now the site houses local businesses, including PHYX Device Repair. There is a certain fitness to that. The people who worked here two centuries ago built and repaired the tools of their day with the best methods available. At PHYX we do the same for the tools of ours: phones, tablets, computers, and game consoles. Same street, same spirit of skilled hands fixing what people rely on.
